RISD-Brown

Solar pavilion

2008-2009

Originally created as a studio course for the National Renewable Energy’s Solar Decathlon Competition in Washington DC, the RISD Solar program has since grown into a collaborative workshop between RISD’s Department of Architecture and Brown University’s School of Engineering. The workshop has become focused on designing and building an off-grid, solar thermal pavilion for on-campus use and experimentation. Working off of earlier conceptual designs for solar-thermal enclosures, including namely the ambitions of the Solar-Skin House presented here, the design has been distilled into a much smaller 460sq pavilion built of the same structural rib and absorptive panel bays pioneered by the Solar-Skin House. Taking advantage of both passive and active conditioning strategies, the RISD-Brown Solar Pavilion was intended to be erected as an inspiring proof of concept, to stoke both public awareness and interest in sustainable design while also serving as an invaluable learning and fund-raising tool for both schools to take advantage of.
